Volty by Energy Road

Research

Our Volty pilot will be producing data in West Lafayette, IN (Kalberer Rd) to power the pedestrian lighting by the end of July 2025 and data will be available around that time. If you are an interested customer and would like to be personally notified as Volty become available, please email: kelly.energyroad@gmail.com

  • Daily Traffic: 7,000 cars passing per day
  • Energy Output: Generates 100 – 200 kWh per day (enough to power 2-3 homes per day)

Volty by Energy Road: Turning Traffic Into Power

West Lafayette, IN – May 20, 2025
Energy Road has unveiled Volty, a roadway-integrated electric generator that transforms vehicle traffic into usable electricity. Unlike traditional renewables, Volty captures wasted braking energy from vehicles that are already required to slow down—such as at speed humps, toll booths, parking lots/garages, intersections, pedestrian zones, etc.

Key Stats

  • Energy Output: ~267 kWh per day per unit (equivalent to the daily energy use of 10 homes)
  • Revenue Potential: $42/day based on $0.16 per kWh net metering
  • ROI: 62% annual return with a 1.6-year payback period
  • Deployment: First pilot launching in West Lafayette, Indiana in late 2025

How It Works

Volty is installed flush into the roadway, similar to a standard speed bump. As vehicles pass over, the system compresses a hydraulic loop that drives a turbine to generate electricity. The design is modular, scalable, and ideal for urban infrastructure.

Use Cases

  • Streetlights
  • Traffic signals
  • EV chargers
  • Airport lots
  • Public facilities

Quote from Energy Road

“Volty is placed on roads where vehicles are already slowing down or required to stop. By converting that wasted energy into power, we’re creating clean, local electricity without disrupting traffic.”
— Kelly Cole, Co-Founder of Energy Road

Why Volty Matters

Volty helps cities reduce grid strain, lower energy costs, and meet sustainability targets. Unlike solar or wind, it generates energy based on vehicle flow—day or night.
